Lindisfarne and Beyond

After a comfortable night in a B & B we headed for Edinburgh. The first couple hours the drive was undertaken in driving rain and heavy fog. We detoured to Holy Island at Lindisfarne. The island is only accessible across a causeway at low tide (fortunately our unplanned stop coincided with low tide. Lindisfarne Castle certainly looks foreboding, sitting on a rocky outcrop facing the North Sea. The constant wind from the North-East was freezing adding to the atmosphere. As we walked around to the other side of the castle it was amazing to discover that it had been converted to a summer home in 1901 by the founder of Home and Country Magazine. Still, it was very interesting wander through a most unusual castle. We passed through the Scottish border mid-afternoon and finally arrived in Edinburgh.
